The vast expanse of the Ecuadorian plains unfolded before us as we embarked on a trek that would weave through the untouched beauty surrounding Mount Cotopaxi. Our goal was not to conquer the summit but to immerse ourselves in the serene landscapes that lay beneath the towering presence of this majestic volcano.
Our journey began just outside of a quaint town surrounded by rolling hills. A small group of trekkers, united by a shared passion about the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation and the sense of adventure, gathered to explore the hidden gems that the plains below Cotopaxi had to offer. Our guide, a knowledgeable local named Philippe, led us through trails that meandered beside the "Acuaduct Highway", and through grassy fields, forests of eucalyptus and patches of wildflowers.

On the second day of our trek, the crisp mountain air filled my lungs as I stood at the entrance gate of the Pasochoa Widlife Refuge, where the towering giant of Mount Cotopaxi dominating the Ecuadorian skyline. This was the beginning of an adventure that would take me through rugged terrains, rushing rivers, and high-altitude landscapes at 4,000 meters above sea level. This day of the trek in Ecuador was an unforgettable journey, filled with breathtaking views and moments of self-discovery.

The third leg of the trek took us through lush forests, the "Cloud Forests of Ecuador", where the sounds of exotic birds and the rustle of leaves underfoot created a symphony of nature. Philippe and our other local guides, shared tales of the region's rich history and the mystical stories surrounding Cotopaxi, adding an extra layer of intrigue to our adventure.

As we ascended, the landscape transformed from dense foliage to high-altitude paramo, a surreal and otherworldly environment. The air grew thinner, but the panoramic views of the Andean peaks surrounding us were worth every labored breath. The vibrant colors of wildflowers contrasted with the stark beauty of the rocky terrain, creating a visual masterpiece at every turn.

Cotopaxi's presence became more palpable as we approached its base. The snow-capped summit glistened in the sunlight, and the sheer magnitude of the volcano left us in awe. We set up our camp under the shadow of Cotopaxi, the anticipation of the next day's ascent mingling with the warmth of the campfire.
The night brought an enchanting display of stars, unhindered by city lights. Underneath the star-studded sky, we shared stories around the campfire, our spirits lifted by the simplicity of the moment. As I lay in my tent, the enormity of the universe above me mirrored the grandeur of the volcano that stood guard. Sleep came slowly, filled with dreams of conquering summits and embracing the challenges that lay ahead.

The next day brought us closer to Cotopaxi, its snow-capped peak a constant companion on our journey through the undulating landscapes. Dawn broke, revealing the icy slopes of Cotopaxi as we embarked on the final stretch. The mountian beckoned, a distant dream that fueled our determination. However, as we continued our trek, the Valley of the Volcanoes revealed its formidable nature. Unpredictable weather and the changing terrain conditions forced us to alter our route.
A highlight of our trek was a visit to Manantiales Spring, a pristine body of water nestled at the base of Cotopaxi. Reflecting the grandeur of the volcano, the spring provided a serene backdrop for moments of quiet contemplation and appreciation for the natural wonders that Ecuador offered.
Finally, we made our way back to the buses that would return us to civilization in Quito. The plains below Cotopaxi had etched themselves into our memories. The journey was not about conquering heights but about embracing the tranquility and beauty that unfolded at the base of the mighty volcano.
Our footsteps had left no mark on the summit, but our hearts were imprinted with the serene landscapes, the camaraderie forged under the open sky, and the enduring spirit of exploration that defined our trek through the plains below Cotopaxi.
